Caring for Your Clothes: Tips to Make Them Last

Baby clothes endure a lot — from milk spills and food stains to endless washing cycles. With a little care and attention, you can keep your little one’s wardrobe looking fresh and make favourite pieces last long enough to hand down to siblings or friends. Here are our top tips for caring for baby clothes.

Always Read the Care Label

It sounds obvious, but care labels are there for a reason. Different fabrics require different treatment, and ignoring the instructions can lead to shrinkage, colour fading or damage. Pay particular attention to washing temperature, drying method and whether ironing is recommended. If a label says hand wash only, it is worth taking the extra time.

Choose the Right Washing Temperature

For everyday baby clothes, a 30°C or 40°C wash is usually sufficient and far gentler on fabrics than a hot wash. Reserve higher temperatures for heavily soiled items such as cloth nappies or muslins. Cooler washes also use less energy, which is better for both your bills and the environment.

Use a Gentle Detergent

Baby skin is delicate, so choose a mild, fragrance-free detergent that is suitable for sensitive skin. Avoid fabric softeners on items made from natural fibres such as cotton or wool, as they can coat the fibres and reduce breathability. A small splash of white vinegar in the rinse cycle works as a natural softener without leaving residue.

Tackle Stains Quickly

The sooner you treat a stain, the easier it is to remove. Here are some common baby stains and how to handle them:

  • Milk and formula — Rinse in cold water immediately, then wash as normal
  • Food stains — Scrape off any solids, apply a small amount of stain remover and leave for 15 minutes before washing
  • Nappy leaks — Rinse thoroughly in cold water, then soak in a mild solution before a warm wash

Always blot stains rather than rubbing, as rubbing can push the stain deeper into the fibres.

Air Dry When Possible

Tumble dryers are convenient but can be harsh on baby clothes, causing shrinkage and wear over time. Whenever possible, dry clothes on a washing line or airer. The fresh air also helps to naturally brighten whites. If you do use a dryer, choose a low heat setting and remove items while slightly damp to reduce creasing.

Store Clothes Properly

Once your baby outgrows an item, wash it, ensure it is completely dry and fold it neatly before storing. Use breathable storage bags or boxes rather than sealed plastic containers, which can trap moisture and cause yellowing. Adding a small lavender sachet helps deter moths without using harsh chemicals.
